LCD & Plasma Televisions: Panasonic, Philips, Samsung, Sony, Toshiba

ABOUT LCD & PLASMA TELEVISIONS

Until recently the only large flat screen televisions (over about 30-inch) were plasma, with LCD being available only for smaller screens. However, LCD is now available in large sizes, up to 46-inch, and is rapidly taking over from plasma. Some suppliers, such as Sony, have stopped making plasma TV altogether. In terms of picture quality, it is a subjective matter as to whether LCD or plasma is preferable. Most seem to prefer LCD as giving a sharper picture.

Other advantages of LCD are that the screens are lighter, and thus easier to fix to wall or stand, and they use less energy. A further drawback of plasma screens is that if a static image (such as a station ident) is left on for a long time, it may 'burn into' the screen, leaving a permanent mark.

All the leading manufacturers are now concentrating on High Definition (HD) televisions, which give much better picture quality when the source is HD. Some manufacturers supply LCD and plasma televisions with built-in DVD player. This minimises the number of boxes and wires, and enables all functions to be managed with a single remote control.
